South Island Sea Otter

We were very lucky to come across this sea otter while whale watching just outside of Victoria, BC. Our guide was exceptionally excited about the spotting as these creature are rarely sighted in the warmer, more populated areas closer to the capital. Our boat kept its distance and watched from afar for about five minutes while the otter observed its surroundings from the safety of the kelp forest canopy before submerging.

A Dale's End

Field and forest turn to moor - that's the sight of a dale's end. Blanketed by a vast expanse of uplands and plateaus where only the most hearty of bird or bush can flourish, this area of northern England is home to an almost hidden patchwork of roadways and villages which have called the oasis-like valleys and foothills of this region home for centuries.

Angler's Evening

While located off the coast of Cambodia, Phu Quoc is an island that resides under the jurisdiction of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. While small in size, it is rich in cultural history and natural endowments. Its gentle, turquoise waters provide ample habitat for anchovies which form the foundation of the island's prized fish sauce - a sauce which is coveted by the Vietnamese people and is generally considered the best fish sauce the nation has to offer. For those that are familiar with Vietnamese cuisine, you'll understand how ubiquitous this sauce is, being incorporated into almost every dish. Despite its distance from the Vietnamese mainland, Phu Quoc and its fisherman play an important role in the culinary culture of the Vietnamese people.

However, this tradition is in turmoil. The effects of climate change are wreaking havoc on the fishing stocks throughout the Gulf of Thailand. Warming waters have decimated the the once abundant aquatic populations of Phu Quoc, forcing its fishermen to venture further and further in search of their livelihood. This presents an entirely new dynamic to their traditional practices which, along with overfishing and pollution, is forming a precarious balance of life and work.

Phu Quoc is now, more than ever, turning to tourism in an effort to support and provide opportunities to its population. If you get a chance to visit, I highly recommend making the trip. You'll relish in its natural parks, stunning beaches and serene sunsets.

Sidney by the Sea

A gateway to Vancouver Island's illustrious capital region, Sidney hosts the heart of Saanich in its serene seaside charm and irresistible farm-to-table character. From its bustling boardwalk, majestic views of the Olympic and Cascade mountain ranges frame its gulf island oceanscape. While its natural beauty and unspoilt charm will draw you in, its vibrant and ever-evolving community will keep you coming back to the quaint coastal town of Sidney by the Sea.

Fish and Chips

Located along the meandering coast of North Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby houses a rich history of maritime heritage. Atop its east cliff rests the ruins of Whitby Abbey, renown as the home of Cædmon - England's earliest ever known poet. Its fishing port was first established during the Middle Ages, offering safe harbour to herring and whaling fleets which scoured the North Sea. It is also where Captain Cook studied and practiced seamanship and where his steadfast vessel The Endeavour was constructed.

In modern times, Whitby's fortune is a reflection of the health of its fishing and tourism industries. While relatively isolated and constrained by the presence of the North York Moors National Park, Whitby draws thousands of visitors every year, particularly during the summer months. These visitors are, more often than not, after one thing - Whitby's famous fish and chips.

A World's End

This photograph was taken at Old Harry Rocks, a familiar formation of chalk columns which mark the eastern most point of England's Jurassic Coast. This photograph is, of course, not of Old Harry Rocks itself (which is viewed best from the sea) but instead captures a southward view towards Swanage and Peveril Point.

Take note of the two unknown hikers atop the crest of the ridge, enjoying a perfect day for a leisurely amble and a well-deserved ale, wherever their destination. This image an homage to those who love walking through the English countryside as much as I do.
